Margareth Hagen

Margareth Hagen has been elected rector at the University of Bergen since 2021 and was re-elected in spring 2025 for a second four-year period. She is a professor of Italian literature and has broad organizational and managerial experience from UiB. Prior to her current role, she was elected as pro-rector from 2017 to 2021. She has been Head of Research at the Department of Foreign Languages and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. Hagen is a board member of the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities and chairs the Nordic/Baltic advisory Board of AE´s Bergen knowledge Hub. Her research has focused on the relationship between poetics, literature, and history in 16th century Italy. In recent years, however, she has worked on issues at the intersection between the humanities and natural sciences. She is a central member of the Literature and Science research group that seeks to transcend the traditional distinction between the two disciplinary cultures.
