Nigel Harkness

Professor Nigel Harkness has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University since September 2024. In this role, he has a remit to support the implementation of the University’s Vision & Strategy and to ensure that Newcastle University’s ambitions are met. He is responsible for academic leadership of strategy, planning, budgeting and resources across all of the University’s core missions. Prior to his appointment as DVC, Professor Harkness was Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (2018-2024) and Head of the School of Modern Languages (2014-2018). He is a Professor of French Studies and has published extensively on nineteenth-century French literature.
