Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

NTNU is an international oriented university with headquarters in Trondheim and campuses in Gjøvik and Ålesund.

NTNU has a main profile in science and technology, a variety of programmes of professional study, and great academic breadth that also includes the humanities, social sciences, economics, medicine, health sciences, educational science, architecture, entrepreneurship, art disciplines and artistic activities. 

The university’s root goes back to 1760 with the foundation of Det Trondhiemske Selskab (Trondheim Academy). A merger in 2016 made NTNU Norway’s largest single university.

Organization, budget and employees

  • Eight faculties and the University Museum with a total of 54 departments
  • Budget: NOK 11 billion, of which NOK 3,2 billion from external sources
  • 8960 employees
  • 7700 full-time equivalents (FTEs), of which 5000 work with teaching, research and dissemination (academic positions). Approx 44 per cent of these are women and approx 39 per cent are international
  • Close cooperation with SINTEF, an R&D organization with 1800 employees (both co-located with NTNU in Trondheim, and in Oslo)
  • Facilities (owned or rented) totalling 734 000 m2
  • University Library with 14 library departments, 1,4 million visits at the libraries, 1,8 million printed books, 1 million e-books, 275 databases and more than 1,2 million annual full-text article downloads

Knowledge and technology development create opportunities for increasing sustainable value creation and finding answers to major challenges. Through the United Nations, the world has agreed on 17 Sustainable Development Goals. NTNU will contribute actively towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. NTNU’s strength is our competence in science and technology combined with academic breadth and interdisciplinarity
